KNOW YOUR METAL

They don’t call it the gold standard for nothing. Gold is one of the most versatile, non-oxidizing metals that has been at the heart of jewelry for centuries. Gold is talked about in terms of karat. All gold is made of 24 parts. The karat is how many of those parts are pure gold. For example, 14K gold is 14 parts pure gold and 10 parts of another metal alloy (to provide the gold with more strength and scratch resistance), or put in other terms, 14K gold is 58.3% pure gold. Pure gold will never tarnish, turn your skin green (even when exposed to chemicals), and retain its value for generations. Gold is a rather soft metal. While sweat and salt water will not tarnish the metal, if put under too much stress or pressure, it can bend or scratch. The lower the karat, the stronger the gold - but the less gold it will contain overall. The higher the carat, the more gold it will have, but it will also be much softer.
925 STERLING SILVER
Silver has been a staple and iconic metal for jewelry for centuries. Sterling Silver, or 925, 0.925 silver, is the standard for silver jewelry, and as you may have guessed, is 92.5% pure silver. The remaining percentage is an alloy of metals to provide more strength and durability. Silver is a highly oxidative metal type. This allows silver to take on a variety of hues, blue, red, purple, yellow, and black. Daily or frequent wear will either maintain the current patina or even return the metal to its pure silver finish. Silver is great for a more casual look, as it patinas with wear.
ION-PLATED STAINLESS STEEL
Stainless steel is one of the strongest metals used in jewelry production. It doesn't tarnish, rust, turn your skin green, or cause allergic reactions. Ion-plated Stainless Steel contains a fraction of the gold that you'll find in Vermeil or Solid gold, but it will wear for years and is far less susceptible to breaking. But as is the case with any plating --even state of the art plating-- you are getting a layer of gold only microns thick (far thinner than a strand of hair) and under a certain amount of stress or abrasion it will scratch and reveal the base metal below.
Prounounced, ver-may, vermeil is a classic french style of plating 925 silver with 3 microns of gold. (The average human hair is about 50 microns thick). Vermeil allows for more budget minded consumers to get the sparkle and warmth of gold without the overall cost. Vermeil is sensitive to oxidization and is not recommended for items that will received a lot of wear or surface contact. We also suggest removing and storing away from humidity when working out, swimming, showering or engaging in physical activities. We recommend keeping vermeil to pieces such as earrings and necklaces.
